Somm & Co. at Karibib Wine Craft

Eight pioneering winemakers, one visionary collaborative cellar and a pair of passionate sommeliers - Somm & Co. is open for business.

Having to abruptly, and somewhat reluctantly, leave his winemaking job at Warwick a decade ago due to the sudden passing of his father. Jozua Joubert found himself at the helm of 55ha of Polkadraai vineyards with an insiders reputation of longstanding quality. Sadly under-exploited due to a long standing track record of supplying grapes to corporate giants.



Feeling more than a little unfulfilled by the sudden lack of creative expression and juxtaposition of numbers first terroir expression second Jozua set out to reform the family farm and launch it on a trajectory to produce some of the most superlative juice in Stellenbosch.

Never heard of Karibib Wine Farm before? You're not alone. Until recently only spoken about with reverence among the elite of wine producers, Karibib has silently been supplying the grapes for some of the Cape's most sought after wines. Alluring the likes of Mick Craven, Chris Alheit, Jocelyn Hogan, Duncan Savage, Reenen Boorman and the list goes on and on. With each parcel either the whole of or just imparting a bit of Polkadraai magic into such rock star wines as Boschkloof's Epilogue, Hogan's Divergent or Raised by Wolves' Karibib Chardonnay.

Not content with simply producing world class wines Jozua yearned to get back to elevage, seeing his grapes through from soil to bottle. And set out to launch Solitary Wines, single vineyard expressions from his own land. And just like that a dream was born. As he needed a cellar, but didn't want to produce large amounts of wine, he would have a lot of extra space. So why not rent that space to those very small scale artisans that seek out his grapes?

A collaborative creative space where young talent and old stalwarts alike can work side by side in shared real estate to reduce the input needed and facilitate the ongoing evolution of South Africa's independent winemakers.


With the concept incubating, a chance encounter over the purchase of a locally painted vinous art piece by Lilly Brannon (How very la-di-da of us), resulted in aforementioned vigneron meeting seasoned entrepreneurial wino Barry Scholfield, with a vision of a sommelier run collaborative tasting experience, and the rest, as they say, is history.

With all the pomp and circumstance stripped away the tasting room at Karibib Wine Craft is all about the product and the people. You won’t find any esoteric modern art sculptures on perfectly manicured lawns. Nor a patchwork of ironic tattoos framed with beard wax and adorned with oversized stretchies.



Quite unlike your ordinary tasting experience, we represent eight artisans each crafting a plethora of vinous expressions from all over the Cape. Our resident somms then select a flight of six to eight wines each week available for tasting. Choose between a guided flight, come by for a specific wine of interest or pop in for a glass after work. All our wines are sold at cellar door prices.

True to the spirit of an authentic country bistro, our kitchen is equally without pretense yet packed full of flavour! With two daily dishes to choose from inspired by classic French and Italian cuisine infused with South African ingredients and flair.

 

On any given day you can find stalwarts like coq au vin or beef bourguignon with Cinsault and wild herbs. Lemon and thyme roast chicken with herb oil and salad nicoise. As well as locally sourced smoked free range grass fed Polkadraai beef brisket with Dijon potato salad and a Cabernet reduction.
