Joakim Blackadder

After completing a diploma in hospitality management through the Leksands Gymnasium in Gotland Sweden Joakim started his career from the ground up working at various restaurants in his home country. Once he felt that he had gained the foundational knowledge he needed, he went back to school to study sommelierie through the Restaurangakademien.

After graduating he obsessively climbed his way through the ranks of Swedish restaurants with stints in top South African restaurants like the Grand Roche in Paarl, Roundhouse Restaurant in Cape Town and Rust en Vrede in Stellenbosch.

During his time at the helm, all of the restaurants he managed far exceeded their previous successes. Racking up honours and awards including coveted Michelan stars, top ten and top three positions in the South African eat out awards, best sommelier in South Africa as judged by Bollinger Exceptional Wine Service Award, Best Award of Excellence by Wine Spectator and Best Wine Program in Africa and the MIddle East to name but some.

During this time Joakim also managed to complete the grueling Wine and Spirits Education Trust diploma becoming one of only a small handful of individuals to hold the qualification.

Stepping out of the top end restaurant scene Joakim handed the baton to his then student Barry Scholfield and moved on to Vinovation where he helped re brand the company and create their international portfolio before starting the Hoghouse Brewing Company with longtime friend and Chef, PJ Vardas. They are currently involved in a groundbreaking project to bring classic smokehouse food to Cape Town at their new restaurant and brewery in Ndabeni as well as starting a massive new restaurant and bakery on the old Moyo site at Spier.

Although not actively working as a sommelier in the formal sense of the role Joakim still maintains his role as a authority in the South African Sommelier industry by serving as a board member for the South African Sommelier Association. He is a specialist in the highest regard. When it comes to service, wine service and international wine trade there are few more respected authorities than him. His track record of success makes him an extremely sought after asset and his insights are followed almost religiously.
