2020 Carinus Syrah
Sourced from Danie Carinus's farm on Polkadraai in Stellenbosch and produced for the Carinus Family Vineyards venture by renowned local winemaker Lukas van Loggerenberg.
Pale ruby in colour this wine jumps out of the glass with pronounced aromas of white pepper, lavender and warm tarmac before yielding to some more restrained herbal aromas on a canvas blueberry and black cherry.
On the palate the wine is dry with a lip smacking bracing backbone of acidity, medium verging on lite bodied, but certainly not insipid or thin, with chewy grippy tannin from the stems, followed by a plethora of black and red fruit, lavender, rosemary and a slight meatynes that culminate in that characteristic Polkadraai finish reminiscent of just a touch of salinity.
This is a very good wine, especially at this price range, and have made both our resident sommeliers very happy. Serve slightly chilled, not cold. On its own-, with anything meaty and herbal or even out of an old olive tin while watching the waves crash on the ocean.
It’s drinking beautifully now but will continue to improve with upwards of five years of careful cellaring.
