Keet First Verse 2017
The wine has an incredible concentration of cassis. For the regular South African, unfamiliar with the predominantly French ingredient, I’m talking good old Jannie verjaar koeldrank. The black one. When it smells so concentrated you imagine it might be sweet you know you’ve got some serious juice.
Cassis gives way to some brighter red fruit components like strawberry and raspberry, a bit of red cherry as well as the darker spectrum of blackberry and plum. While constantly reminding you of its terroir with a plethora of fynbos and dried herbs.
Secondary aromas of tight-grained oak, toasted cocoa, a hint of sawdust and toast entwine to give you the perception of Christmas spice and are perfectly balanced to the plethora of fruit, slowly giving away to the first delicate signs of tertiary forest floor and freshly tanned leather. Wow.
The palate is dry, full-bodied, and silky smooth, perhaps just wanting a touch more lift from the acidity but generously rewarding in a mouth full of concentration that follows through perfectly from the palate with just a hint of peppermint and pine on a velvety finish of dark fruit.
